ABOUT
This project was inspired by two main themes, food and memories. The name which roughly translates to "Sweet Home" in Arabic, is an anagram of my original family name that my siblings and I came up with as a joke if we were to open a sweet shop, as the word "halwa" can also mean dessert.
"Sweet Home" is also a play on the phrase, "home sweet home". Having moved around frequently throughout my childhood, the idea of home to me meant two things; my house, wherever I was living at the time and England, in particular my Grandmother's house where we often spent our summers. Eids and weddings with all my family in one place. Moving around, I was exposed to many different cultures, traditions and so much food!
Food and memory can often hold a strong connection because it involves multiple senses. The way food looks, smells and of course tastes can often leave a lasting impression on us and create a sense of nostalgia or even distaste which we then associate with a certain flavour or scent. Desserts and sweets in particular are often connected with celebrations and special occasions during our childhood and lifetime.
For this reason, I have decided to start off this site with 5 dessert recipes. Each of which has a link to a memory or food.
Dessert making specifically has always fascinated me as it can be so technical and creative, it becomes an art form in itself.
